I want to be academic, confident and romantic, but I just feel weird and overdramatic.

JESSICA’S BAND OF THE WEEK.
so i totally started doing my favourite local bands of the week and then just completely forgot about it. I think its only fitting i go with one of my favourites - STICK & POKE
Stick and Poke - Teeth on a String
Stick and Poke hail from Toronto, ON and are the best of what folk punk uke core has to offer. This is one of their new songs and my personal favourite. I have had the pleasure to watch Lauren and Alison grow over the past year, and im really excited about where they’re headed. for fans of the wild, against me! mischief brew. cheeck it out. and catch them on tour this month!!!
JESSICA’s BAND OF THE WEEK - STINKBOX
STINKBOX - Toronto ( Live)
for the next couple of weeks my band of the weeks are going to cover some of my favourite local bands. you all probably want to check out Stinkbox. The first time I saw them play I kept getting this gnarly but soulful street version of rosa feel. thats really the best way I can describe them. Katt and Beej spend their time playing folk punk on the streets, and well it rocks.
also check out the rest of their set from the first folk the system fest - http://www.reverbnation.com/stinkbox
JESSICA’s BAND OF THE WEEK - MALLORY
Mallory - FULL SET!
this is the best review I have ever read about a band before, so I wont even attempt to write my own review, spot on. :
“…there is a great crime in abandoning the idea of singing as a mechanism of vocal tone and harmony in punk music, and Mallory does a great job of leading the way for the riot folk movement to embrace the beautiful elements of music that punx have often discarded as being unsalvageable or undesirable.
[mallory] exhibits creative and heart-wrenching lyrics in a genre that might be in danger of losing a bit of it’s depth as folks start to trade lyrical polish for complexity in instrumentation. Rather than working against their ruckus-y sound, Mallory’s often times anxious and lonely lyrics rise above their instrumentation to provide anthems for a generation that finds it’s emotions, even it’s sadder emotions, welling inside of them with an energy that this society tries to hold back. Maybe it’s the almost Smiths-esque self doubt, maybe it’s the sense of freight-train-blues heartbreak, maybe it’s the hints of Bright Eyes-y lyrical flourishes, whatever you want to call it, I feel like it finds a particular meaning for the nomads and misfits who refuse to kill the future… In short, Mallory is music for those who know the ship is sinking, but refuse to go down without their voices being heard, even if they are screaming apologies to people and homes long gone.”

JESSICA’S BAND OF THE WEEK- PUNKIN PIE
PUNKIN PIE - Cats Luck
when rosa was a pop-punk band. enough said right?
JESSICA’S BAND OF THE WEEK - PROFANE SASS
Profane Sass - Wayfaring Stranger
Profane Sass hail from Portland, OR and the best way to describe them is they just do their thing. and uh it works. honestly there are no words to tell you how awesome this band is. and you all need to listen to them like now. if you like blackbird raum, hail seizures or anything like that you’ll love profane sass.
JESSICA’s BAND OF THE WEEK: THE SIDEKICKS - Baby, Baby
I fell in love with this ohio band last summer ( or was it the summer before that?) when they opened for the riot before and bomb the music industry. Their release ‘Awkward Breeds’ on Really Records is such a solid album through and through. Really Records suggests the album has a dark mood that is conveyed through the vehicle of youthful, jovial, poppy rock songs. If you have a soul you’ll dig this.
JESSICA’S BAND OF THE WEEK:
Dylan Sizemore - Best I Ever
Currently residing in Bloomington, Dylan Sizemore’s latest release ‘Cashed’ was recorded by Ryan Woods. Seriously take a second and check out Dylan Sizemore’s bandcamp - http://dylansizemore.bandcamp.com/ . His self titled is easily in my top 10 albums as of right now. If you’re a fan of Toby Foster, The Wild , Jake Lazovick or anyone else of that sort, you’ll dig this for sure.
JESSICA’S BAND OF THE WEEK - SAINTSENECA
SAINTSENECA - Wonderlust
Saintseneca is one of my favourite bands, I feel like they’re always doing something new and interesting and come on have you SEEN Zac Little? Saintseneca is a folk band from Columbus, Ohio currently made up of Zac Little, Steva Jacobs, Maryn Jones and Steve Ciolek ( of the sidekicks!) I seriously really insist you all check them out.
ALSO - they’re heading east this July! catch them on tour!
JESSICA’S BAND OF THE WEEK - SELFISH WHALES
Selfish Whales - Tuesday Blues
The first time I heard about Selfish Whales was from their pink couch sessions video, they tied Ava Luna for ’ most people crammed on a couch’. You can check out that video here - http://youtu.be/3eYp5SXVXIA
From Bloomington, Indiana the band is actually currently hiatus . HOWEVER that shouldn’t stop you from checking out ’ Enjoy The Weather ‘. Enjoy The Weather is probably one of the best summer time soundtracks, ever.
JESSICA’S BAND OF THE WEEK:
Michael Jordan Touchdown Pass - Titles Are Formality
I have decided for my first band of the week, it was only fitting to pick my favourite band of all time and tumblr namesake. My hopes for this band of the week is to introduce some cool people, to some cool new music. I know many of you already listen to Michael Jordan Touchdown Pass but for those who dont, well what are you waiting for?
at the age of 15 Michael Schneeweis started MJTDP as a solo project and it was soon being distributed by Plan-it-X Records. To date there isn’t an album I dislike by Michael. I strongly suggest checking out Cash, Money, Etc to start. His new album Baby Steps has a completely different feel, but I love it just as much. Growing up, I always felt very connected with Michael’s music and it always seemed to capture what I was feeling at that time.
You can check out all of Michael’s releases on bandcamp here:
